When you accidentally forget to make a sheet metal body outside of a component, you can save the model. then open a new model and then insert the saved one into it. now the sheet metal body is saved in a component and you can work with it as normal without having to recreate all your work.

I'm not sure if this is the best way or not. However, you can create a new comoponent in the design. Then drag and drop the sketch to the new component. Now you can create a joint between the component and the solid body. The joint will also allow you to position the sketch as desired.
