One of the pros of staying in this region is that it is a charming and quaint area, closer to nature and without a doubt more open than downtown Kyoto. Excellent neighbourhoods to stay but far from the centre are Arashiyama, Yamashina and Fushimi, they should only be considered if you are staying for at least two weeks. Recommended areas to stay on a budget: Kyoto station area, Higashiyama, Yamashina and Fushimi. Recommended areas for families with children: Higashiyama, Kamigyo, Sakyo ... I would suggest the Cross Hotel Kyoto (different location than the Sakura Cross Hotel suggested in another comment.) It was super close to Pontocho Alley and Kiyamachi-dori.
