World Vets has many opportunities for pre-vet students to volunteer. On most trips, students will have the opportunity to learn hands on surgical techniques. I would aim for 3000 hrs if you are able to. Also try to get in and shadow at a specialty practice for sx and whatever else you want to know more about.
